On 3-12-2026 the Merom Town Board was officially notified that their municipal insurance will be terminated effective 4-1-2026
After an exhaustive search for insurance the Merom Town Board voted to purchase partial insurance at the cost of about 6 times the annual budgeted cost. They then voted to close all uninsured facilities.
The insurance carrier for The Town of Merom reevaluated the risks of insuring the town. They visited the town, watched the board meetings and performed underwriting investigation. The underwriters determined that the town was too high risk to continue insuring so they terminated coverage effective 4-1-2026. It was determined that because of the actions and methods of two of the board members as well as their public statements of disregard that they were too high risk to insure. It was brought to the members attention that if they would step down the town could get insurance. Rather than face these facts these board members denied that they were at fault and rather than resigning they forced the town to seek out insurance from any source available. Partial insurance was found at a cost of 50% of the town's total annual operating budget. Once again, instead of resigning they committed to spend the town's financial reserves on insurance to cover liability for the board members, officers, and city hall but not the other public facilities leading to the current closures. These facilities will remain closed until full insurance can be established.
